Innovative Development Solutions

Innovative Development Solutions (IDS Foundation) has been founded in July 2007 to support African organizations that aim at poverty alleviation and sustainable development in rural areas. It supports projects that have the potential to continue without further financial assistance after the initial subsidy has been spent.

IDS’ primary partner is Mpfuneko Community Support (MpfunekoCS), a South African NGO that is implementing biogas projects near Kruger National Park. IDS Foundation assists MpfunekoCS by offering new ideas for further socio-economic development, by providing technical assistance, and by fundraising in the Netherlands.

IDS Foundation is now raising funds to build additional biogas digesters in South Africa. These digesters will help households to cook on gas instead of fuelwood. The collection of fuelwood results in deforestation, while burning the wood leads to emission of CO2 and inhalation of smoke by women and children in the kitchens. The main advantages of the use of biogas are reduced emission of greenhouse gasses, improved health for women and children, and reduced deforestation. Biogas technology is a powerful tool for poverty alleviation since it uses waste products (i.e. cow dung) to produce a highly useful gas and it creates a number of jobs. A by-product of the production of biogas is so-called ‘slurry’, which can be used or sold as a fertiliser. The production of biogas reduces CO2 emissions and this provides scope for selling carbon credits.

IDS is a foundation based and registered in the Netherlands that is mainly dependent on grants from private individuals and organisations. Your donation is most welcome and will truly help the poorest of the poor in one of the former homelands of South Africa. Please, feel free to contact us for more information.
